The First Pipe Band in China

In 2005, two members of the Hong Kong St. Andrew's Pipe Band were invited to China, where they promoted Scottish Bagpipe music successfully and helped establish Mainland China's first Scottish pipe band in Zhuhai, Guangdong for Chinese people.

A large part of training was conducted in Jilin University (Zhuhai Campus), and all the new pipers were from Northern China, some of them from as far away as Xinjiang, and had graduated from university music degrees. The students had no prior knowledge of bagpipe or bagpipe music. It was their first time to hear Scotland The Brave, Auld Lang Syne and other popular tunes, so the band was absolutely started from scratch.

Today's band, already a famous performing group and owned by a business corporation, plays everyday in the largest Chinese theme park and resort in Zhuhai, Guangdong. We hope they can promote Scottish music through their performances and pass on their musical knowledge and appreciation to the people in China.
